In 2021, Rolex unveiled the Explorer 124270, marking a significant evolution in the collection. This new model represents a strategic shift by Rolex, returning to the classic 36mm case size after a brief departure with the 39mm 214270 model.
Signaling a major turning point for the collection, the then-new ref. 216570 was larger than any other Explorer II watch at 42mm in diameter. Additionally, while the lug width on all previous Explorer II watches was 20mm, the updated Rolex 216570 featured slightly larger 21mm lugs to better match its larger case. I have a ~7 to 7.25 inch wrist and the perfect size for me is that 39.5mm 16600 Sea Dweller. It took a day to get used to the new Explorer II visually, but I have adjusted and think it looks fine on my wrist with no overhang. The newer reference brings a slight curvature to their termination, as well as a more even brush pattern that matches the end link of the bracelet, unlike the older model. More importantly, the distance between the lugs has been reduced from 20mm to 19mm.
Updated in 2016, the modern 214270 Explorer is 39mm with an Oystersteel case and a black dial, the recognizable 3, 6, 9 markers (now with lume in them) and a refreshed handset that is both longer and a bit thicker. All of the lume is Rolex's proprietary Chromalight and it glows blue when things get dark. As you might expect, the new 36 Explorer (reference 124270) from Rolex feels extremely familiar to previous 36mm examples. When we went to shoot this watch we actually brought a 114270 with us so we could directly compare the two watches.
