When considering timepieces from each brand that are intended for extensive outdoor wear, there are no better options than the Tudor Ranger and the Rolex Explorer 36. At first glance, both can appear very similar, but there are some key distinctions that set them apart. In fact, it could be argued that the only real difference, especially in the early days, was the use of movements provided by ETA opposed to Rolex-crafted movements. Tudor watches carried Rolex-signed cases, bracelets, and crowns all the way up until the 1990s. In true David and Goliath fashion, at this year’s GPHG the Tudor Pelagos saw off some of the best offerings from the biggest brands to take home the prestigious Best Sports Watch award. The Pelagos is a hair over 14mm thick, while the Submariner is a hair over 12mm. To be fair, the Pelagos’s larger size and greater level of water resistance earns itself a better comparison to the Rolex Sea-Dweller – and the Sea-Dweller is 15.2mm thick and more than 50mm lug to lug.
